Understanding Syphilis Symptoms in Korea, Seoul: Essential Information

Syphilis Symptoms: What to Watch For

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It progresses through several stages, each with distinct symptoms.

Primary Stage

  • A painless sore (chancre) appears at the infection site—genitals, anus, or mouth.
  • The sore usually heals on its own within 3 to 6 weeks.

Secondary Stage

  • Skin rash, often on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
  • Flu-like symptoms: fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, fatigue.
  • Mucous membrane lesions in the mouth or genitals.

Latent Stage

  • No visible symptoms; infection remains in the body.

Tertiary Stage (if untreated)

  • Severe complications affecting the heart, brain, nerves, and other organs.
  • Can cause neurological problems, blindness, or death.

Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent serious health issues. If you suspect exposure, get tested promptly.
